5 Traits of a Great Leader

by Rick Forbus, Ph.D.

5 Traits of a Great Leader illuminates the five areas of understanding necessary to become a great leader. Project managers have influence and influence is leadership. This course addresses five leadership components each leader will want to understand.  Great leaders have an understanding about their:

 1. Calling – The learner will hear the concept: knowing why they are “called” to a vocation, helps them to see the big picture.  Leaders see work and life from a higher viewpoint. Answering the question, “why am I on the planet?” helps leaders work and live with perspective. Illustrations expand this section of the course.

 2. Contentment – The learner will hear the concept that “leaders choose to be content.” An outcome for this course would be for the learner to understand whether their contentment is from a view of complacency, climbing or somewhere in between.  The course brings to light the concept that contentment is what “holds a leader to their calling.”

 3. Character – Although character is difficult at times to describe adequately, the learner will look at several “pillars” to a leader's character like: (1) relationships, (2) family and (3) ethics. The learner will be presented the concept that we each are “painting our character one brush stroke at a time.” Our leadership portrait is designed by our choices, decisions and relationships.

4. Crafting – Great leaders are life-long learners. Even though project managers have training and credentials in their areas of expertise, leaders want to learn outside of their industry; to expand their leadership capacity. The learning outcome in this portion of the course is for the learner to set goals to extend their learning and focus on their own crafting.

 5. Coaching – Great leaders understand the concept of mentoring and coaching others to meet their potential. Leadership is cyclical and coaching others along the leadership path is important to growth. Many great leaders have coached others to greatness. Someone once said, "leadership is not about how many followers one acquires. You know you are a great leader when others you have coached become great leaders." In the closing of this course, the learner is challenged to set goals in each of the five areas of understanding.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explain the five traits of a great leader.
  2. Identify areas of personal strength.
  3. Articulate goals associated with growth with each trait.
